    • Caroline was killed in a train wreck near Hackettstown, Warren County, New Jersey. Matthew Mroch, Caroline's great great-grandchild, shared this story with me in February 2012: Caroline was traveling by train with other German-Americans from Chicago to New York City where they were scheduled to board a ship for travel to Germany. A storm washed sand and gravel onto the tracks at a road crossing just west of Hackettstown, causing the train to derail. Pipes on the engine were damaged and vented steam into two passenger cars that ended up above the engine, scalding scores of passengers. Caroline was taken to Phillipsburg, New Jersey, where she died of her injuries. According to Matthew Mroch, Ferdinand traveled by train to retrieve Caroline; this is supported by newspaper accounts. See the album below for more narratives on the accident, including sensational accounts from various newspapers, and photographs of the disaster.

The St. Petersburg (Florida) Time, Thursday, 18 June 1925, front page, correctly indicates she died in Phillipsburg, but the New Castle (Pennsylvania) News, Wednesday, 17 June 1925, front page, indicates she died in Dover.
