- Louise, her brother Ludwig, and their mother Louise sailed from Bremen aboard the Hermann and arrived in Baltimore. The Hermann was built by Caird & Company of Greenock, Scotland, and operated by Norddeutscher Lloyd (North German Lloyd Company) from 1865-1896. The iron-hulled Hermann was 337 feet long, 40 feet wide, with a tonnage of 2873. Equipped with two masts, one funnel, compound engines, and a single-screw, she had a top speed of 13 1/2 knots. The Hermann carried 80 first, 120 second, and 500 third class passengers.

- Edward's death certificate indicates he was born in Püsitz, a small village (121 inhabitants in 1905) 2.4 km northeast of Bresin (now Brzezno) and 12.8 km (8 miles) northeast of Lauenburg (Lebork). This is now in the Gdanskie province of Poland.
