  • Name  Geert Swick
    Nickname  George, Gerrit
Born  20 Jan 1885  Netherlands Find all individuals with events at this location  [1, 2, 3

    • The record indicates that Geert Zwik, age 18, traveling with his cousin, Affien (Effie) Klooster, age 16, left Rotterdam on 9 April 1904 aboard the S.S. Nordam. They stated that their final destination was Falmouth, Michigan, they each had their tickets along with $5, and that they were going to join "Uncle J. Werkman, Falmouth, Mich." Effie's mother, Antje, had a sister Fennechien and a brother Jan. Fennechien had married Gerrit Zwik. It appears that Geert was born prior to the marriage; the same can be said for Effie. I cannot find any birth records for Effie or Geert in the Genlias database, perhaps because of their birth status. "Uncle" Jan Werkman had immigrated with his family in 1887. His death record confirms the relationship with Antje and Fennechien.

Right above Geert and Effie is a "Geert Werkman", age 70 (born about 1834), from Oostwold, Groningen, Netherlands. He was also heading to Falmouth. I'm not sure who he is exactly, but that's probably not a coincidence.

    • George "Zwik" or "Zivik", age 25 and single, is listed as a "cousin" in the household of Nicholas (age 27) and Effie Smitter (age 21). It shows his year of immigration as 1904.
Census  1920  Caldwell Township, Missaukee County, Michigan Find all individuals with events at this location  [5
    • He is still shown as a single person, but his estimated birth year was 1882 and year of immigration is shown as 1900.

    • The cemetery website shows his date of death as 18 January 1926 but his headstone clearly shows 15 January 1926. This cemetery is located near Falmouth, in Section 7, along Koopman Road.

    Notes
    • I think that this Geert (Gerrit, George) Zwik (Swick) is the son of Gerrit and and Fennechien. Unfortunately, I cannot find him in Genlias, perhaps because of his illegitimate status. He is shown as a cousin of Affie Klooster, which makes sense as Affie's mother Afke and Geert's mother Fennechien were sisters. It also makes sense because Affie and Fennechien have a brother Jan who immigrated to Falmouth, Michigan. Unfortunately, his death certificate is of no help.
